Cone Denim Chore Coat – Handmade in Greensboro, NC
The Hudson Overall Company Chore Coat for Fall 2025 brings archival inspiration into the present. Each piece was patterned, cut, and sewn start to finish by Evan at Revolution Mill in Greensboro, NC, using only the finest USA-made materials. This edition is built from the last roll of rigid 10oz Cone White Oak 2x1 Selvage Denim, a historic textile woven in Greensboro before the mill’s closure. With just a dozen coats produced, this is a limited, once-in-a-generation piece of Hudson’s Hill history.
True to the utilitarian roots of chore coats, this pattern features four exterior pockets - three patch style and one engineer-style watch pocket - plus an interior pocket for keeping essentials secure. Sleeves, shoulders, and seams are reinforced with triple-needle chainstitch construction, while pockets and collars are lockstitched for durability. A busted back seam exposes Cone’s iconic redline selvage ID, a hallmark of White Oak denim for over a century. Durable DOT military blackout snaps finish the front placket and sleeve adjusters. Every detail speaks to longevity, function, and purpose.
Heritage Construction With Cone White Oak Denim
The denim used for this coat was woven in 2016 at Cone’s legendary White Oak Mill in Greensboro, North Carolina. At 10oz, the fabric strikes a balance between strength and comfort, perfect for layering through fall and winter. This sanforized selvage denim has minimal shrinkage - tested in a boiled and machine-dried example. Topstitching uses natural A&E dual-core thread, reinforced with #3 navy bartacks for added strength. Even the size tape was woven on narrow rocker shuttle looms in NC by Avery Dennison, keeping every component true to regional textile heritage.
Zero Waste Production and One-of-a-Kind Variations
Each coat was produced in an end-of-day fashion, meaning Evan used every last panel of fabric to avoid waste. A few examples feature panels of pioneer stripe denim, others swap the collar for vintage-washed 8-whale tan corduroy, and some include reversed panels for a subtle harlequin effect. Scraps from this run were even repurposed as gift ties during a Hudson’s Hill speaking engagement. No two coats are identical - each carries unique character while sharing the same timeless foundation.
Designed with a classic silhouette and modern functionality, this chore coat is made to be lived in. Large, practical pockets hold everything from tools to notebooks to your everyday carry essentials. It’s a coat built for work, for travel, for daily life - and one that grows better with every season of wear.
Limited Production, Made to Last
Our Hudson Overall Company chore coats are produced one size run at a time and will never again be made in this exact fabric. Sizing is based on real-world fit testing with friends of Hudson’s Hill, designed to work as a true outerwear piece. Availability is extremely limited, and future releases will feature different textiles - never another Cone White Oak 2x1 selvage.
Built to wear in, not out.
Notes from the sewing room:
"This one was emotionally tough to make. I got the fabric as a gift from Cone Denim last year in exchange for producing a run of Tencel selvage denim bags for their corporate promotional gifts for bigger customers and special guests. It wasn't much cloth, but it was the very last 40ish yards of any 2x1 denim from White Oak in their small collection within their HQ's inventory. I wanted to make something special with it, and so I waited to use it and tucked it away.
This spring, I decided to do another run of chore coats using this fabric, but many things got in the way of it getting completed. My mom died. The cut bundles remained on sewing room sleds for several months. It took a while to get the motivation to finish them, with life outside of work getting in the way. Alas, when we were discussing the September Kissaten, Christopher pushed me to finish them out. I am thankful for friends who know how to give you that nudge at the right time. So, here they are, just in time for cooler weather.
I can only hope they are loved and lived in by their future owners. They sure would make a nice present, to yourself or another. But just don't buy it and wear it for nice occasions. Wear the heck out of it, and let it be a second skin for years."
