Several years ago, we worked with a local knitter to hand make replicas of USN watch caps from World War II Red Cross knitting manuals. They sold out, and they were kind of expensive, after all you have to pay for quality, artisanal. In the world of vintage clothes, an original USN or US Army watch cap is highly coveted, and so therefore they are quite expensive. Even the replicas and authentic reproductions get up there in price. So, we went to our supplier for the Mil-Spec watch caps that we carry in a variety of other colors (available in both wool and acrylic), and found a thicker, chunkier acrylic version that had the perfect pantones to emulate the watch caps of that era. We also happen to still have a few rolls of original 100% natural cotton selvage woven label tape, the last two rolls from Avery Dennison's plant that shuttered about a decade ago. So, we worked up a graphic for the old Name & Rate labels, had it cut into a rubber stamp here locally at Gate City Rubber Stamp Co., and hand print and attach them ourselves with that perfect patina. The best part? It won't hurt your wallet like those others out there. Best of all, it makes a one-of-a-kind opportunity to add your own name and rate to it!
